Sheila is originally from Dalhousie, New Brunswick and has worked as a professional artist in Calgary, Alberta for the past 20 years. Sheila remembers sketching as young as age six, and her collection of sketchbooks shows the development of a self-taught artist. With a strong desire to explore her creative side she has pursued many artistic challenges over her lifetime. Since 1999 much of her artwork has been inspired by photographs of her hometown taken by her mother, Florence Matchett. Maple trees and fall colors continue to inspire her artwork. A student by nature she enjoys sketching and developing her understanding of acrylics, oils, and water media. It suits her to spend time concentrating on the develop of an idea which often results in a series of work that she hopes is considered different and original in concept.
She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and is the SCA Western Regional Representative. An active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, she has held the position of Exhibition Coordinator with the FCA Calgary Chapter. She is an elected member and Executive Secretary with the Riverview Artist Association and a member of the Alberta Society of Artists and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. She participates in numerous juried shows each year with each of her affiliations. She teaches adult art classes and workshops, and writes a monthly newsletter and blog that includes inspirational stories and an inside look at life as an artist.
